QuickBooks Error 1904: [2] failed to register, while installing. How to fix?

Error 1904: [extension/name/file path] failed to register is commonly caused by an incorrect file setting or broken file. If the multiple mistakes are presented and they expressly mention the IC wrapper.dell, qbprefs.dll,  RcnFnb RequestHandler.dll and qbupdate.exe (among others), when the problem is apparently caused by a damaged component of Microsoft Visual c++.

This mistake can also happen when you are installing QuickBooks Desktop after upgrading your operating system (like from Windows Vista to Windows 7) and your computer was not reset after the upgrade.

How to Resolve Error 1904: [file path / name / extension] failed to register

There are some special cases need a different access. Expect that you have one of the special cases below, which run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic tool.

How to Run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic tool

  • Tap Ignore the error message and let the installation complete. DO NOT open QuickBooks Desktop.
  • Reboot your computer
  • Download and run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool, when the installation did not complete.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Activate the Built-in Administrator and install QuickBooks under the built-in administrator account, when the running tool did not resolve the issue.

Some Special Cases

When you have Bitdefender

When you are installing QuickBooks Desktop on a computer with Bitdefender, you have to add C:\Program Files\Intuit (C:\Program Files(x86)\Intuit if you are using a 64-bit machine) to the Bitdefender exclusion list. Turning off or disabling Bitdefender will not solve this problem.

If the mistake happen when installing Adobe Flash Player

1. Download and run QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool.

2. Uninstall the Adobe Flash Player.

  • Press Windows + R to open the Run window, on your keyboard.
  • Write in Control Panel and tap OK.
  • Tap Uninstall a program
  • Choose Adobe Flash Player ActiveX and tap Uninstall.
  • Follow the onscreen guidance to complete the process.

3. Install and Download the Adobe Flash Player from www.adobe.com.

When the error references QBversionTool.dll

Key 1: Use your QuickBooks the Install Diagnostic Tool

  • Run and download QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool.
  • Restart the computer and reinstall QuickBooks.

Key 2: Check your permissions and use hidden (built-in) Administrator account

Build a notepad file and save it to the installation directory to check permissions
  • Press Windows + R to open the Run window, on your keyboard.
  • Write in Notepad tap OK.
  • Write in QBTEST on the notepad.
  • To the File menu, choose Save As.
  • Rescue the file to the installation directory.
  • 32-bit C:\Program Files\Common Files
  • 64-bit C:\Program Files(x86)\Common Files

When the user does not have a permission to this folder. You will receive an error when saving the notepad file. Sign in as the local administrator and try installing QuickBooks. If you are already logged in as the administrator, sign in as the Built-In Administrator.

How to Activate Built-in Administrator (Hidden Admin)

Step 1: Activate the Built-in Administrator

  • Press the Windows key once, on your keyboard.
  • Write in CMD. Right-tap CMD/ Command Prompt/ cmd.exe and choose Run as Administrator.
  • On the command prompt window, write in net user administrator /active: yes and press Enter.

Quick tip: If you see an error, write in net user administrator /active instead.

  • You may need to use Additional instructions on Safe mode from Microsoft.

Step 2: Switch to the Built-in Administrator Account

  • Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and click Switch User, on your keyboard

Windows 8 users Press the Windows key and tap the user icon on the upper right of your screen.

  • Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and choose the default Administrator account.

Step 3: Hide the Built-in Administrator account (as it was before)

  • Press the Windows key once, on your keyboard.
  • Write in CMD. Right-tap CMD/ Command Prompt/ cmd.exe and choose Run as Administrator.
  • Write in net user administrator /active: no and press Enter, on the command prompt window.

Step 4: Alteration the Security Settings of the installation directory

  • Browse to C:\Program Files\Common Files.
  • Right-tap the Common Files folder and choose Properties.
  • Under the Security tab, tap Edit.
  • Then Under Group or user names, choose Users.
  • Under Permissions for users, choose to allow for the following permissions:
      • Modify
      • Read & Execute
      • List Folder Contents
      • Read
      • Write
  • Tap Apply and OK.

Step 5: Install QuickBooks

  • Try installing QuickBooks Desktop.
  • After installing QuickBooks Desktop, switch to your original user sign in.
